Making a Fence
When you are intending to install your own fence you will need to consider the following; what type of fence you want, how many posts and panels you will need, if you want gravel boards and how you will fix the posts into the ground. Hopefully the following will help you make sense of what you require!
Always remember to check the line of your boundaries before you start. If you need to take down an old fence first, make sure it's yours to demolish. You can put up a new fence alongside an existing one as long as the one you're building is on your property. Check the position of under-ground cables and pipes before starting.
Posts
When buying posts you should consider if you require wooden or concrete. Concrete posts last much longer but are more expensive and more difficult to handle. You will need to consider the height of the posts you require; if you are putting up a 1.83m fence then the posts should be 60cm in the ground so you will require 2.4m posts. If you are using a met post you will require a 2.1m, post. You will have to cut this down as required. The next thing to consider when choosing posts is the diameter. For a 1.83m fence you would normally choose a 10cm x 10cm post. You can get away with using a 7.5cm x 7.5cm post but the 10cm x 10cm posts do tend make the fence stronger and last longer.
Gravel boards
This is an optional extra! Gravel boards are installed between the ground and the panel. People mainly install gravel boards for two reasons, firstly to stop the panels from touching the ground and thus making it less likely to rot and so last longer and secondly to retain soil. If the ground between the two gardens is uneven a gravel board will stop soil being pilled up against the fence as this does make the fence rot very quickly. Gravel boards are usually 1.83m long. In wood they are 15cm high and this is generally the only size available although they can be stacked on top of each other. In concrete they come in two sizes, both are 1.83m in length but come in 15cm and 30cm height. You should only fit concrete gravel boards to concrete posts. Remember that you will require a longer post or a shorter panel for each gravel board you install. So if you wished to install 1.83m fence you would still use 2.4m post with 60cm in the ground, you could then install a 15cm gravel board and a 1.6m panel or a 30 cm gravel board and 1.5m panel.
Panels
Lap panels are probably the most common type of garden fence. Our panels are hand made so we can make a panel from six inches (15cm) high to over eight ft (2.4m) high! But be aware planning will be required for any solid fence over2m (6ft 6in) high. Always consult your local planning office if in doubt. This does not mean that you can not attach trellis to the top of a 6ft 6in fence as trellis is not regarded as a solid fence. Standard panels sizes are 3ft (90cm) 4ft (120cm) 5ft (1.5m) and 6ft (1.83m).
Close board Panels
Close board panels are panels made with vertical featheredge boards. Theses are much stronger than panels and tend to last a lot longer. Again you can use either concrete or wooden posts and gravel boards as required.
Close Board Bays
Theses bays are made from vertical featheredge boards that you install on a framework that you create. To create the framework for a 1.8m high by 3m wide bay you would require either 1 or 2 2.4m mortised posts (depending on what you are attaching to at each end!) Approximately 30 12.5cm 1.65m high featheredge boards, 3 aris rails, 1 gravel board a centre stump and two cleats. Again you can use either concrete or wooden post and gravel boards. This is a more complicated fence to install but can rise and fall with the ground. For further information please contact us.
Picket Fence
This comes in round top and pointed top. We offer 90cm and 1.2m height. This can be bought in bays of 1.8m length or sold by the pail (each piece) with rails.
Trellis
All our trellis is hand made so we can make trellis to fit as required. We only offer square trellis; the size of the gaps in the trellis can be varied as required. Please see the pictures for the different sizes. We do make curved top trellis.
